How long to refinish a hardwood floor: for about 1,000 square feet, plan on 3 to 5 days of work. That's a day to sand, a day for stain and the first coat, and one or two more for the final coats. You can usually walk on it in socks the day after the last coat, but the finish keeps curing for 1 to 4 weeks.
Those numbers shift with the size of the job, the finish and the weather inside your house. Below is what each day looks like, what speeds a job up or slows it down, and exactly when your furniture, rugs and pets can come back.
A day-by-day refinishing timeline
This is a typical schedule for about 1,000 square feet with a stain color and three coats of finish.
| Day | What happens | Can you be in those rooms? |
|---|---|---|
| Before day 1 | You clear furniture, rugs and anything on the floor. We fix loose or damaged boards. | Yes |
| Day 1 | Sanding to bare wood in several passes, edging along walls, then vacuuming. | No: equipment and noise |
| Day 2 | Stain samples, stain, then the first coat of finish once the stain is dry. | No: wet stain and finish |
| Day 3 | A light buff between coats, then the second coat. | No |
| Day 4 | The final coat, then drying. | No |
| Day 5 | Light foot traffic in socks. | Yes, carefully |
A natural floor with no stain can save most of a day, and fast-drying water-based finishes can allow two coats in one day.
What makes it take longer (or shorter)
- Square footage and layout. One open room goes faster than five small rooms and a hallway.
- Repairs. Replacing boards comes before sanding and adds time.
- Stain. Stain needs to dry fully before finish goes on. Dark colors and humid days need longer.
- Finish type. Water-based finishes dry in hours. Oil-based finishes usually need overnight between coats.
- Number of coats. Each extra coat adds drying time.
- Temperature and humidity. Finish dries slowest when the house is cold or damp. In North Texas summers, keeping the AC running steadily helps.
- Stairs. Treads and risers are sanded and coated by hand.
How long does it take hardwood floors to cure?
Dry and cured aren't the same thing. A finish is dry when it's no longer tacky and you can walk on it gently. It's cured when it has reached full hardness and resistance to scratches and spills. That takes much longer, and it's why rugs and heavy furniture wait.
| Finish | Dry between coats | Fully cured |
|---|---|---|
| Water-based polyurethane | About 2–4 hours | About 1–3 weeks |
| Oil-based polyurethane | About 8–24 hours | About 3–4 weeks |
Always follow the label on the product actually used. Manufacturers set their own times, and we'll give you the ones for your floor.
When you can walk, move furniture, put rugs down and let pets back
Counted from the final coat, with typical water-based finish. Add a day or two for oil-based.
| Activity | Typical wait | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Walk in socks | About 24 hours | No shoes, no dragging feet |
| Walk in shoes | 2–3 days | Clean soles, no high heels |
| Move furniture back | 2–4 days | Lift, don't slide, and put felt pads on every leg |
| Pets | 3–7 days | Trim nails first and keep play off the floor |
| Area rugs | About 2 weeks or more | Rugs trap fumes and can mark soft finish |
Can you stay home during refinishing?
Sometimes. If we're only doing part of the house and you can reach the kitchen, a bathroom and the bedrooms without crossing wet finish, many families stay. Water-based finishes have far less odor than oil-based ones. With oil-based finish, or when the whole ground floor is being done, most people plan a night or two away. Young children, anyone with breathing problems, and pets do best out of the house while finish is going down.
Faster options
If the wood itself is fine and only the top coat is dull, a screen and recoat skips sanding to bare wood. It's often done in a single day, with light traffic the next. Dustless sanding doesn't shorten the drying time, but it cuts cleanup afterward, so you get the house back sooner.
Quick answers
How long does it take to refinish 1,000 square feet of hardwood floors?
Usually 3 to 5 working days, including sanding, stain and three coats of finish. A natural color or a fast-drying finish can shorten it. Repairs and stairs lengthen it.
How soon can you sleep in the house after polyurethane?
With water-based polyurethane and good ventilation, many people sleep at home the night after the final coat. With oil-based polyurethane, plan to stay elsewhere for one to two nights while the strongest fumes clear.
Is recoating faster than refinishing?
Yes. A screen and recoat is usually one day because nothing is sanded to bare wood. It only works if the existing finish is intact and free of wax.
