What we fix
Hardwood floor repairs we handle
Most damage is confined to a handful of boards. Fixing those, rather than the whole room, saves the rest of a good floor.
Cracked or broken boards
Floorboard repairs where a board has split, chipped or been gouged by something dropped or dragged.
Water damage
Cupped, buckled or blackened boards from leaks and spills. Read about water-damaged hardwood floors.
Pet stains and odor
Urine that soaked into the wood turns it dark and can't be sanded out, so those boards are replaced.
Gaps and loose boards
Boards that have shrunk apart, lifted or come loose from the subfloor are refastened, filled or replaced.
Squeaks
We find where boards or the subfloor are rubbing and fasten them from above or below.
Deep scratches and gouges
Damage too deep to sand out is fixed by swapping in new boards.
The most asked question
Can you replace just one board?
Yes. The damaged board is cut out down the middle, the pieces are pried free without disturbing the neighbors, and a new board of the same species and width is fitted in. Its tongue is trimmed so it drops into place, and it's glued and fastened.
Where several boards in a row are damaged, new boards are woven in at staggered lengths so the repair doesn't form a visible patch. The new wood is then sanded and finished to match the color and sheen around it.
Choosing the fix
Repair, refinish or replace?
| Choice | Right when | Relative cost |
|---|---|---|
| Repair boards | Damage is limited to an area and the rest of the floor is sound | Lowest |
| Repair, then refinish | Repairs plus a worn floor overall, so everything ends up one even color | Middle |
| Replace the floor | Damage is widespread, or boards have been sanded too thin | Highest |
Repairing is almost always cheaper than replacing. When the whole floor is worn too, doing the repairs right before hardwood floor refinishing gives the best match, because new and old wood get sanded and finished together.

How our repair process works
Look and measure
We see the damage in person and check moisture, so we fix the cause and not just the symptom.
Match the wood
We match species, width, thickness and grade, and use salvaged boards from closets when needed.
Repair
Damaged boards come out and new ones are woven in and fastened.
Blend the finish
The repaired area is sanded, stained and coated to match the floor around it.
Pricing
Hardwood floor repair cost
A repair is priced by how many boards come out, how hard the wood is to match, and whether the finish has to be blended over a small spot or a whole room.
Photos of the damage help us give you a rough idea quickly. The firm price comes after we've seen the floor.
What changes a repair price
- Number of boards: a few, or a whole section
- Matching: common oak vs. hard-to-find species or widths
- Cause: a subfloor or moisture problem underneath
- Finish blending: spot finish or full room

Repair questions
Can wood floors be repaired?
Nearly always. Hardwood is made of individual boards, so damaged ones can be removed and replaced without touching the rest. Even badly scratched floors can usually be sanded and refinished instead of torn out.
Will the repaired boards match?
We match species, width and grade, then stain and finish the new wood to blend in. New wood can look slightly brighter at first and evens out as it ages in your light. Repairing before a full refinish gives the closest match.
How do you fix a loose floorboard?
We find out why it's loose first: dry wood, failed nails or a soft subfloor. Then it's refastened from above with countersunk nails or screws that are filled and finished, or from below if the basement or crawlspace allows.
